Welcome to Hosseinieh Foundation Darul Imaan
The Hosseinieh Foundation Darul Imaan is a prominent Shia Muslim religious and community center located in Eastville, Bristol, UK. Established in 1999, the foundation was born from the dedication of local Shia Muslims who recognized the need for a religious, cultural, and educational hub for the growing Shia community in the Bristol area. The center’s establishment was supported not only by local residents but also by contributions from various national and international Shia Islamic organizations. The name “Hosseinieh” refers to a traditional space dedicated to commemorating the life and martyrdom of Imam Hussain (a.s.), the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), who is a central figure in Shia Islam. The addition of “Darul Imaan” — meaning House of Faith — signifies the foundation's commitment to nurturing Islamic faith, identity, and values in the hearts of its community members.

What Is Shia Islam?
Shia Islam is one of the two main branches of Islam, the other being Sunni Islam. It centers around the belief that Imam Ali ibn Abi Talib, the cousin and son-in-law of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), was the rightful successor to the Prophet, appointed by him at Ghadir Khumm.
How Did It Begin?
After the Prophet Muhammad’s death in 632 CE, a disagreement emerged over who should lead the Muslim community. While the majority chose Abu Bakr as the first caliph, a group of Muslims believed that the Prophet had appointed Ali as his successor due to his spiritual and moral qualities. These followers became known as Shi'atu Ali, meaning “the party of Ali” — later simply, Shia.
Core Beliefs of Shia Islam
- Divinely appointed leadership (Imamah): Shia Muslims believe that leadership of the Muslim community is not a matter of consensus but a divine choice. Imams are considered sinless, spiritually pure, and guides in both religious and worldly matters.
- The Twelve Imams: Twelver Shia (the largest Shia group) believe in a line of twelve Imams, starting with Imam Ali and ending with Imam al-Mahdi, who is in occultation and will return as the promised savior (Mahdi).
- Love of the Ahlul Bayt: Special reverence is given to the Prophet’s family (Ahlul Bayt), including Fatimah (his daughter), Ali, and their descendants.
- Commemoration of Karbala: The martyrdom of Imam Hussain (a.s.) at Karbala is a pivotal event that symbolizes standing against tyranny and injustice. It is commemorated annually during Ashura.
